M'EWAN, William Barker (1870-1933)
1CL Stirling 1903-1906; 1CL Dunedin (New Zealand) 1908-1933
Apprenticed in 1884 to an Edinburgh bookseller, he was employed by a commercial library there from 1888 until 1903. He emigrated to New Zealand on medical advice in 1906 and was employed for the next two years as a shop assistant in Auckland and Westport. During his near 25 years at DUNEDIN he made that service a model for later developments in New Zealand, particularly in reference work and local studies.
